Psoriasis Case Study – 1

Patient Raghuram V, aged 37, visited my clinic on 25/12/2013 for a consultation. As he was earlier diagnosed with Psoriasis, he was seeking treatment for his Psoriasis.

Four years back he started to notice the thickening and mild discoloration of the skin around his left knee joint. Initially, he ignored it thinking might subside, but as the days passed on, the itching gradually started. When he used to itch, the skin used to come out in small flakes. This made him worry as the itching also was increasing. Then he visited a nearby doctor and was prescribed some oral medication and external application. This helped him to subside his symptoms and he was happy then.

In the same year, during the winter it started reappearing back, and again he consulted the same doctor but this time it didn’t help him much. The worst part was that a similar patch started on the right knee joint as well. Then he visited a well-known dermatologist and there his condition was diagnosed as Psoriasis. He started the medications prescribed by the dermatologist, but it took almost 6 months for him to be free from patches and itching.

The following year,  the patches reappeared with more severity and started spreading to both of his elbows and it started in the scalp as well. Then he approached many other dermatologists but there were not many changes seen in his condition. As he was informed that Psoriasis cannot be curable with Modern Medicine, he consulted homeopathy and others by the advice of his friends and family. He took medication prescribed by them and still the symptoms were not reduced as such.

He was getting depressed day by day as the symptoms were increasing gradually and he had stopped all medications for about one year before he visited me.

Today he is a Changed Man. Happy, Satisfied, and Positive.

You can see the visible changes on his skin during treatment.

Raghuram was treated with Ayurvedic psoriasis treatment in the following steps:

1st Stage:

  • Understanding the root cause of the problem rather than understanding symptomatically.

Every disease which it gets manifested in the body has definite reasons to get express itself. In Ayurveda, the disease gets manifested through a change in the quantity of the doshas. The doshas get either aggravated or decreased due to various reasons like food, climate, lifestyle, mental status, etc…The impairment in these doshas leads to the initiation of the diseases. This does not happen suddenly but takes a long time as doshas have to get accumulated and produce the disease. The first step of the treatment always will be identifying the factors which are responsible for the initiation of the disease and correcting them.

2nd stage :

  • Correcting food habits and lifestyle.

Food and lifestyle are the major factors that are responsible for the maintenance of the health of a person. Indulging in wrong food habits, untimely food, eating junk, consuming food without considering the appetite, etc… will lead to the accumulation of doshas in the body. If a person continues these habits for a long time they will gradually vitiate or derange the doshas and produce the disease. The correction of food habits and lifestyle is the most important step in treatment, especially in psoriasis. Right diet and lifestyle contribute 80% of the treatment.

3rd stage:

  • Eliminating the toxins accumulated in the body.

By not following the dietary rules the doshas get aggravated in the body along with seasonal changes and lifestyle leading to the diseases. The aggravated doshas have to be removed to bring the balance in doshas. The expulsion of doshas can be done through purificatory procedures will help medicines to act efficiently.

4th stage:

  • Correcting the imbalances through medication.

Internal and external medications will help to normalize the doshas so that the disease can get subsided. The Ayurvedic medications include various decoction preparation, tablets, herbal jams (lehyams), medicated oils, medicated ghee, herbal powders, etc…The medications will change according to the state and stage of the disease and the patient. Medications help stop the pathogenesis and help to cure the disease.

5th Stage:

  • Preventive medications to prevent the reoccurrence.

Psoriasis is notorious for its reoccurrence. Many psoriatic patients experience the relapse of psoriasis whenever they come in contact with triggers. The preventive medications strengthen the body tissues and immune system to prevent reoccurrence. Prevention of psoriasis is not only through medications it also involves the right diet and lifestyle to avoid triggers.

WHAT THE PATIENT SAID AFTER THE TREATMENT:

I was suffering from scalp psoriasis for four years and was taking various medication in allopathy homeopathy, they either didn’t work or the results didn’t last very long. It’s really getting difficult for me to get out of the house because of itching and scaling. It was gradually started visibly in forehead also. I was frustrated. When I was searching for the cure I heard about Dr. Chaithanya. I met the doctor and started treatments, Within a week the scaling reduced a lot and itching also reduced. Then I was on internal medication and diet. It took almost 4 months for the complete disappearance of symptoms. I still follow the restrictions advised by the doctor. my psoriasis has been cleared for more than a year now, really happy.”
